Megasthenes' Indica is often reconstructed using the portions preserved by afterwards writers as direct quotations or paraphrase. The elements that belonged to the first text can be identified from the afterwards is effective based upon similar content, vocabulary and phrasing, even if the material has not been explicitly attributed to Megasthenes.
